Following an operation lasting several hours last night, the Igoumenitsa Coast Guard was able to prevent the illegal transportation of 70 immigrants and refugees from Iraq who had set off from the Parga coast and were heading towards Italy.
6 Ukrainians and Iraqis, who were apparently involved in the illegal operation, were arrested.
While it was on patrol late last night, the Coast Guard caught sight of a cargo ship heading towards the beach at Ai Giannaki, Parga, where a sailing boat with a Ukrainian flag was at anchor.
At around 11 o’clock, once all the Iraqis had boarded the sailing boat, the Coast Guard moved in and proceeded with arrests. The passengers were families with children from Iraq, some of whom had asylum. The sailing boat was impounded and taken from Parga to Igoumenitsa.
Igoumenitsa Port Authority is conducting an investigation into the matter.
