Karoubatika residents at their wits’ end over landslide and neglected roads

Strong concern, frustration and a sense of abandonment are growing among residents of the Karoubatika area, as a serious infrastructure problem has remained unresolved for more than a year.

As they report, a landslide occurred on the area’s road network in the winter of 2025, and to date, no substantial remedial work has been carried out by the responsible authorities.

Obstacle for Vehicles and Emergency Services

The situation is further aggravated by unchecked vegetation. Grass and tree branches have spread across large sections of the road surface, dangerously narrowing the road and making it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for cars to pass.

The problem is even more concerning because people with serious health problems live in the area. Local residents point out that, under these conditions, access by ambulance or another emergency vehicle is almost impossible, potentially putting lives at immediate risk.

Residents pay for clean-up themselves and send letter to Municipality

Faced with what they describe as indifference on the part of the authorities, residents have been forced to pay out of their own pockets for crews to cut back the vegetation and clear the roads — a service that should, as a matter of course, be the responsibility of the municipal authorities.

Having exhausted all patience, the affected residents sent an official letter of protest to the Technical Services Department of the Central Corfu Municipality, calling for an immediate on-site inspection, the restoration of the landslide-affected section and regular maintenance of the vegetation before an irreversible incident occurs.
