ECOZOI: Leading the way in eco-friendly living and healthy eating in Corfu

The ECOZOI Cooperative of Producers and Consumers of Organic Products (ECOZOI SYN P.E.) was founded in 1998 by members of the Corfu Environmental Protection Association, with the aim of encouraging organic farming and making organic products available to a wide section of the population. It also seeks to inform the public about healthy nutrition, ecological agriculture, and, more broadly, eco-conscious consumption and the protection of the natural environment.

Corfu is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea with many distinctive characteristics and has traditionally been an important commercial link between Greece and Italy. For more than three hundred and fifty years, it served as a port and a station of the Most Serene Republic of Venice.

Today, the island’s main “product” is the provision of tourism services. Agriculture has become a secondary occupation over the past forty years, although in the past it produced all kinds of agricultural products. Organic farming is now taking its first steps, and organic products have already become known to the wider public.

Our cooperative has played a leading role in all of these efforts.

Today, it has approximately 120 members. It is managed by a five-member Board of Directors with a three-year term of office and is overseen by a three-member supervisory committee.

The work of our Cooperative is part of the wider ecological movement.

Our members believe that access to natural foods in sufficient quantities is a right for everyone, and they want the production of all other goods necessary for human life to be carried out in an environmentally responsible way. To achieve our objectives, we undertake the following activities:

• Operation of a shop selling organically produced food products.

• Sale of other environmentally friendly products, such as biodegradable bags, recycled paper products, non-toxic paints, natural cosmetics, detergents, and more.

• Organisation of events, seminars, talks, exhibitions, press publications, and the production of radio and television programmes on the above themes.

• Provision of services to professional and amateur organic farmers, including the standardisation and packaging of products, consultancy support, the creation of a seed bank with adapted plant varieties, joint purchasing of machinery and useful supplies, the preparation of studies, and other related activities.

• Cooperation with public authorities, research institutions, specialist scientists, organic certification organisations, associations and groups of organic farmers, and similar cooperatives, as well as participation in their networks at local, national, and international levels.

ECOZOI currently operates a retail outlet selling organic products in Corfu Town.

The Cooperative maintains regular communication with scientific and professional organisations and has already participated in seminars and conferences organised by the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, local bodies, certification organisations, and groups of producers.

It subscribes to scientific publications and specialist editions related to organic farming. It organises conferences, workshops, and exhibitions on organic products in the Corfu region. It also welcomes and provides guided tours of producers’ farms and the Cooperative’s retail outlet to large numbers of trainees attending agricultural seminars, as well as secondary school pupils who are members of environmental groups, informing them about issues related to organic farming.
