CORFU. Mr. Skourtis presented information concerning Corfu’s historical and cultural development over time, emphasising its role as a meeting place of diverse cultural influences.

(Central Corfu Municipality) The new Ambassador of Ireland to Greece, Ciara O’Floinn, accompanied by the Consul of Ireland in Corfu, Anastasia Lychnou, was welcomed today at the Old Town Hall by the Deputy Mayor of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands, Christos Skourtis.

The visit took place in a positive atmosphere and highlighted the willingness of both sides to explore new opportunities for cooperation in the fields of tourism, culture, and exchanges between institutions and communities.

During the meeting, Mr. Skourtis presented information regarding Corfu’s historical and cultural development over time, emphasising its role as a meeting point of diverse cultural influences. He also referred to key elements of the island’s cultural identity, such as its musical tradition, philharmonic bands, cultural events, and local gastronomy.

Particular reference was made to the tourism link between Corfu and Ireland. According to available data, approximately 30,000 Irish visitors travelled to Corfu by air in the previous year, with the trend remaining upward, supported by direct flights and the activity of low-cost airlines during the summer season.

In this context, proposals were discussed for the development of joint cultural initiatives, including the prospect of establishing an annual event dedicated to relations between Corfu and Ireland. Such an initiative could serve as a stable cultural reference point and further strengthen cooperation between the two sides.

It was a shared assessment that Corfu, through its cultural wealth, tourism potential, and international character, can serve as a solid foundation for strengthening Greek–Irish relations at the local level.

Closing the meeting, the Deputy Mayor stated:

“The Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands remains committed to outward-looking policies and to the development of international relations that enhance culture, tourism, and the sustainable development of the region. Today’s meeting marks the starting point for more systematic cooperation, based on mutual respect and the shared cultural elements of both sides.”
