CORFU. The Korissos Association is organising an open public discussion on how the area can be developed and promoted in a truly sustainable and low-impact way, without sacrificing its natural wealth.

The area of Issos, Lagoudia and Lake Korission is one of the most important natural treasures of Corfu and is protected by the European NATURA 2000 network under separate designation codes. It is a rare ecosystem with unique flora and fauna which, in recent years, has been at the centre of discussions about its “development” and future.

The event aims to open a meaningful public dialogue on how genuine, low-impact and sustainable use and promotion of the area can be achieved without sacrificing its natural wealth.

Speakers will include Stamatis Ginis, Vice President of the Korissos Association, and Spyros Ginis, member of the Board of Corfu Natural History Digital Museum. They will present ideas, concerns and proposals for the protection and rational management of this unique ecosystem, based on the existing study prepared by the main speaker.

The event is addressed to members of the public, scientists, organisations and everyone who believes that the protection of nature and its responsible, low-impact use can — and must — go hand in hand.

The productive potential of the currently neglected Lake Korission, in terms of fresh and affordable fish, could meet the needs not only of the surrounding communities but of the whole of Corfu, possibly even supporting exports outside Greece, particularly of eels, while also creating new jobs.
