Free mammogram screenings – how to book an appointment

The  Hellenic Cancer Society Mobile Mammography Unit, continuing its “Breast Cancer Awareness and Early Diagnosis Programme,” will be in Corfu from Monday, November 17 to Wednesday, November 19, offering free mammogram screenings.

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women in our country, with the number of new cases estimated at around 8,950 per year. Despite its high incidence, the disease increasingly poses less of a threat to life and quality of life — both because of significant advances in medical science, which have led to more effective and personalised treatments, and because the number of women undergoing preventive examinations continues to rise. As a result, cancer is now being detected at earlier stages, when treatment is most effective and can lead to complete recovery.

The best examination for the early diagnosis of breast cancer is the mammogram. Regular preventive screening with mammography can reduce mortality from the disease by up to 30%. The test is painless, takes very little time, and with modern equipment, the radiation dose is extremely low.

To support women who, due to geographical constraints or financial difficulties, are unable to access mammogram screenings, the Hellenic Cancer Society, in collaboration with its Corfu Branch, the Ionian Islands Regional Authority, and the Ionian Islands Regional Development Agency, is offering free preventive mammogram screenings.

As part of this programme, the Mobile Mammography Unit will be located at:

• Monday, November 17 – Agios Athanasios Cultural Centre (next to Orfanou Pharmacy)

Appointments will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Operating hours: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Eligibility criteria for the mammogram screening:

• Women aged 35 years and older.

• The participant must not have had a mammogram in the past 12 months.

• Must have no history of breast cancer, biopsy, or cosmetic breast surgery.

• Must not be on their menstrual period (from 3 days before to 5 days after menstruation).
