Children send environmental message from Mon Repos
CORFU. Through play and experiential learning activities marking World Environment Day, the children connected with the values of environmental responsibility and planet conservation.
The lush landscape of Mon Repos provided the ideal setting where the greenery of nature met the hope of the future—our island’s pupils. Celebrating World Environment Day through play and experiential learning, the children engaged meaningfully with the values of environmental awareness and the protection of our planet.
This festive and highly educational event was jointly organised by the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands, the Ionian Islands Regional Authority, the Ionian Islands Regional Directorate of Education, and Corfu Directorate of Primary Education.
The choice of this beautiful forest was no coincidence. This idyllic location echoed with children’s voices and laughter while serving as the perfect environment to convey a clear, timely, and powerful message to the younger generation: proper waste management is a matter of both culture and survival for our community.
As part of the event, specially designed stations featuring interactive games and educational activities were set up with the participation of specialised organisations:
- Hellenic Recovery Recycling Corporation (HERRCO): Information on the importance of recycling, proper waste management, and the role of the Municipality’s Green Point recycling facility.
- Forest Directorate: Activities and guidance on protecting our forest environment.
- COREL – Green Oil (Used Cooking Oil Recycling Company): Raising awareness about the responsible management and recycling of used cooking oils.
A Top Priority
The pupils were visited by Mayor Stefanos Poulimenos, accompanied by Deputy Mayor for Cleaning Services Pantelis Giannoulis and Deputy Mayor for Culture Nikos Vradis. Representing the Ionian Islands Regional Authority were Regional Governor Yiannis Trepeklis and Deputy Regional Governor for the Environment Spyros Ioannou. Also in attendance were Regional Director of Education Petros Angelopoulos and Director of Primary Education Aristotelis Vlassis.
Given that the waste-management issue has affected our island significantly in recent years, this event forms part of a broader initiative that remains an absolute priority for the Municipality.
Through a series of educational pupil visits to the Green Point facility, where pupils learn about proper waste sorting and recycling practices throughout the school year, the Municipality continues to invest steadily in fostering environmental awareness among the citizens of tomorrow.
