Way found to deal with used mattresses

Κι όμως! Τα στρώματα δεν τα "πετάμε" στους κάδους απορριμμάτων!

CORFU. North Corfu Municipality is collaborating with the Hellenic Recycling Centre (EKAN).

(North Corfu Municipality) A lorry full of discarded mattresses was sent by the Municipality to the special management unit in Aspropyrgos. The collaboration began with a visit by a delegation from the Municipality of North Corfu to the Hellenic Recycling Centre (EKAN) and the mattress management unit on Thursday, July 11.

The Municipality was represented by Deputy Mayor Spyridoula Kokkali and the President of the Municipal Council, Panayiotis Papadatos.

The EKAN unit processes Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) through its collaboration with the Electrocycle S.A. System, with which the Municipality also has a contract. The factory spans an area of 50 stremma, employs 130 staff and has been operating for 20 years.

The processing is mainly done mechanically, with minimal human intervention, ensuring high efficiency and quality. The unit also includes HFR, a special processing line exclusively for refrigerators, and it is the only one in Europe with a processing line for electronic cigarettes.

The collaboration supports the integrated waste management, specifically of electrical/electronic devices in the Municipality of North Corfu. The next significant step is the management of mattresses. The first lorry with 250 mattresses has already been transported to the licensed factory in Aspropyrgos.

The photo is from the archives, but it is not uncommon today in Corfu. Especially at the start of the tourist season when rental properties are being renovated. The question remains: Is it possible for anyone to believe that the refuse truck will take the mattress the next morning and that it won't remain there next to the bin for days?
