CORFU. They are being hosted at the ΄Stamatios Desyllas΄ camp as part of the Central Corfu and Odessa Municipalities΄ Festival of Solidarity and Friendship.

(Central Corfu Municipality) 36 children from Odessa have arrived in Corfu and are being hosted by the Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality at the camp in Gouvia.

The 36 children and their 11 escorts were welcomed with great emotion in Corfu by Mayor Meropi Ydraiou and Deputy Mayor Andreas Skoupouras.

This is an important initiative by the Municipality that conveys a message of humanity and solidarity, showcasing Corfu as a place of hospitality, humanitarianism and peace.

The campsite in Gouvia is ready and from Friday, as part of the Central Corfu and Odessa Municipalities' Festival of Solidarity and Friendship, the 36 boys and girls from Ukraine are being hosted to provide them with a great time that they are so greatly in need of.

Mayor Meropi Ydraiou felt the need to publicly thank the members of the public and businesses of Corfu who have expressed and continue to express their desire to help and are contributing to the hosting of the children.

"We are sending out a positive message for our island, for Corfu," she said. "It's a message that reaches out to all of Europe, to the entire world. Corfu is embracing the children who have experienced the horrors of war, and the local community is showing its solidarity.

"The fact that the 36 children we are hosting at the Gouvia campsite come from Odessa holds a special significance for all of us. In Odessa, there is a strong and vibrant Greek community; it is the birthplace of Grigoris Maraslis, one of Corfu's greatest benefactors and donors."
