CORFU. Following our article about British residents cleaning up a Cephalonia beach, a Corfu resident told us about how she and her family have started cleaning up a beach here.

Sarah-Jane Monro, her husband Andy and their son Jamie enjoy walking on Halikouna beach and this year they made a New Year’s resolution to do whatever they could to keep it clean. They have already been out collecting twice this month and keep a roll of bin bags in the car so that they can do a little bit each time they go out.

Sarah uploaded a photo to her Instagram feed – monrophotoscorfu – with a full bin bag and the tag, ‘1 bag, 2 people, 10 minutes!’ She told Enimerosi that she did this to encourage other people and show them that they don’t need to spend hours – just 10 minutes and fill a bag.

Sarah and Andy have a holiday company in Corfu and believe it’s important to keep the area clean for the tourists. They have also decided this year to use paper rather than plastic straws and to provide their guests with baskets and cotton shopping bags, to avoid the use of plastic bags.
