CORFU. Statement from the Mayor of Central Corfu following the arrests for noise pollution on Christmas Eve.

The Mayor of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands, Stefanos Poulimenos, made a public statement following the three arrests of business owners for noise pollution on Evg. Voulgareos Street on Christmas Eve.

He stated: "We witnessed this behaviour from a very small number of businesses who do not respect the traditional customs of the area, which draw crowds, including their own customers.

Playing music at full volume while carols are being performed nearby by choirs, philharmonic bands and others is both provocative and self-destructive behaviour, which could not go unanswered."

He continued: "We do not want the town to become a cemetery; we want it to remain alive. We want people to move around, enjoy its beauty and partake in the unique events of the area, which attract both locals and visitors.

Businesses must respect both the residents living near or above them and the local traditions, and they should not provoke with their behaviour."
