Solidarity and friendship towards Palestinian Ambassador from Central Corfu Municipality

CORFU. The Mayor expressed the wish for a peaceful solution, which will ensure the establishment of a viable and independent Palestinian state.

The Mayor of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands, Stefanos Poulimenos, welcomed the Palestinian Ambassador to Greece, Mr. Yussef Dorkhom, at the Old Town Hall on Saturday, June 1.

The Mayor welcomed the Ambassador to the island of Corfu and congratulated him on his participation in the 19th Festival organised by the National Council Against Drugs – Corfu Branch, stating that "such collaborations promote the values of respect for human rights, peace and solidarity among peoples."

The Mayor then expressed the feelings of unwavering friendship, sympathy, and appreciation that the people of Corfu have for the Palestinians, noting that "the Greek people have experienced similar situations of migration, refugees, and displacement."

During the courtesy meeting, the two sides discussed the geopolitical fluidity prevailing in the wider Eastern Mediterranean region, while the Mayor expressed the wish for a peaceful solution to the Palestinian issue, which will ensure the establishment of a sustainable and independent Palestinian state, coexisting peacefully and securely with Israel.

The Ambassador, in turn, thanked the Mayor for the warm welcome and hospitality, focusing on the historical bonds of friendship between the Palestinian and Greek people.

Present at the meeting were: the President of the Municipal Council, Mr. Xenophon Alamanos, the Deputy Mayor for Sustainable Tourism Development and Public Relations, Mr. Spyros Halikiopoulos, and the Ambassador's special assistant, Mr. Essam Alantasi.
