On Monday evening, two members of the 10-member Greek-Albanian gang involved in cocaine trafficking in Corfu were remanded in custody.
The individuals in question are two Albanians, aged 32 and 36, who appeared before the Corfu Prosecutor yesterday. After their testimony, it was decided to remand them in custody.
As for the two Greeks, aged 36 and 39, who were also referred for interrogation on Monday, they were released with restrictive conditions, with the consent of the Prosecutor and Investigator.
Five more members of the cocaine trafficking gang are expected to appear before the Prosecutor today, with the process scheduled to conclude on Saturday, 20 January. The alleged 'mastermind', a 38-year-old Albanian, will be among those.
The operation of the cocaine trafficking network in Corfu began in September 2022. The police investigation to dismantle the criminal organisation had led to partial police operations or strikes against its members, which took place last summer.
However, the dismantling of the criminal group occurred at the end of last week as part of an organised police operation that resulted in the arrest of 10 members, including two leading figures (the 38-year-old alleged leader and a 45-year-old woman). Charges were filed against them for the formation, management, and participation in a criminal organisation with the purpose of cocaine trafficking.
Dolls and Game Boy
The organisation's members, in order to conceal their illegal activities, used phone connections registered under non-existent persons ('ghost persons') and communicated with each other using encoded language in their phone conversations. Words like "dolls," "gas burners," "coffee," and "record" referred to narcotics, while the code "Game Boy" related to the use of scales.
