Batteries stolen from four South Corfu municipal rubbish trucks

Incidents of sabotage on South Corfu municipal rubbish trucks were discovered this morning. Deputy Mayor of Cleaning Services, Nikos Bogdos, told Enimerosi that unknown individuals stole the batteries from four vehicles, which were parked along with the rest of the fleet in the parking area in Ano Messoghi. A complaint has been filed with the Benitses police station, and a lawsuit has been filed against any responsible party.

The municipality's fleet consists of seven rubbish trucks; however, following this development, the four vehicles are now immobilised. Solutions are being sought so that, in the event that waste collection resumes, they can get back on the road.

Today's incident adds to the ongoing saga of the recent (non) waste collection in South Corfu. Resident groups are guarding the access road to the mobile waste treatment facility, preventing the approach of rubbish trucks, as they oppose its operation, fearing it will downgrade their area.

As a result, over 300 tons of rubbish remain on the roads throughout the municipality, creating a hazard to public health.
