Agios Stefanos wildfire still not under control (15:15)
CORFU. Reinforcements of five vehicles and 12 firefighters are expected to set off for Corfu at 16:30.
The wildfire in Agios Stefanos, Avliotes is currently ongoing. The firefighting forces and the North Corfu Civil Protection Service are battling to contain the fiery fronts, but the strong winds in the area are making their task difficult.
At 16:30, reinforcements consisting of five vehicles and 12 firefighters are expected to set off for Corfu. In addition, two foot units from the Special Forest Firefighting Unit (EMODE) and four firefighting aircraft from Aktio and Thessaloniki are currently operating in the area.
Talking to Enimerosi, North Corfu Mayor, Giorgos Mahimaris, described the situation as dramatic and continued to say that evacuations are proceeding smoothly without significant issues (towards Avliotes Square, Avliotes Beach and Magoulades). He added that, so far (15:10), there have been no incidents where either people or domestic animals are at risk. He praised the heroic efforts of the pilots and the people participating in the firefighting efforts.
The Ionian Islands Regional Police Department has posted on social media, providing information about traffic arrangements in North Corfu due to the fire as follows:
"Due to the fire in the area of Agios Stefanos, Avliotes, traffic arrangements are currently in place on the local roads:
- From Arillas towards Agios Stefanos,
- From Kavadades towards Agios Stefanos
- At the Avliotes intersection."
