CORFU. There was a coordinated battle involving ground crews, aerial resources and volunteers
The wildfire that broke out on Sunday evening, August 30, in the Aspiotades area was brought fully under control and contained. The immediate and coordinated response of the Fire Service, local authorities and volunteers was crucial in halting the fire before it could spread out of control and limiting the damage to 5 stremmata of forest.
A strong force was mobilised to tackle the blaze:
Fire Service & EMODE: A total of 41 firefighters took part in the operation — 25 firefighters and 16 personnel from two teams of the 15th Special Forest Firefighting Unit (EMODE) in Corfu — using 7 water tankers.
Aerial Resources: Six aircraft provided assistance — 2 PZL aircraft based in Corfu and 4 Air Tractor aircraft from Andravida and Aktion.
Municipality of North Corfu: Deployed 2 pickup vehicles, 1 ten-tonne water tanker and 2 excavators.
Volunteer Groups: Four Scouts, 4 members of EMED (Greek Volunteer Emergency Response Team) and 4 volunteers from the Hellenic Red Cross made a valuable contribution to the operation.
