Cause of 68-year-old΄s death confirmed as leptospirosis
CORFU. Three cases and two deaths - National Public Health Organisation (EODY) to visit the area and take necessary actions.
It was confirmed yesterday that the recent death of the 68-year-old man was due to leptospirosis, according to the results of a molecular laboratory test.
A confirmed death of an elderly person from the same village was recorded last May and another case was detected in the same area early in the summer. However, the second patient improved after treatment and escaped the danger. All three of these cases were involved in agricultural work.
EODY team
However, the fact that these cases originate from the same location has raised concerns among the authorities, and a team from EODY(National Public Health Organisation) is scheduled to immediately visit the area where the cases were identified.
An epidemiological investigation will follow in the village, carried out by a team from the Health Department that will go to the area to take the necessary measures, including fumigation, disinfection, informing residents about hygiene rules and managing stagnant water, among other things.
Rodents
The disease is transmitted by both wild and domesticated animals. The most common animals that transmit the disease are rodents. It is usually transmitted through urine or water or soil contaminated with animal urine upon contact, especially when there are cuts or openings in human skin, in the eyes, mouth or nose. It typically does not spread from person to person.
