CORFU. Mayor Meropi Ydraiou told Mr. Lodge that Corfu was and still is a safe tourist destination.

The Central Corfu Mayor Meropi Ydraiou welcomed the British Ambassador to Greece Matthew Lodge to her office yesterday.

The British Ambassador was accompanied by the Head of the Embassy's Corporate Services Giorgos Yiannaris and the Corfu Vice Consul Alison Turney. During the meeting, matters of mutual interest were discussed with particular emphasis on the development of tourism.

Mr. Lodge said he was impressed by the beauty of our island, while both sides referred to the traditional friendship between the two countries and the fact that Corfu is a consistently popular holiday destination for the British.

The British Ambassador pointed out that it is no coincidence that a large number of British citizens have chosen to reside permanently on our island, while the Mayor said that the relationship of trust with Corfiots is well established.

The Mayor and the Ambassador said that the cooperation with the Municipality is continuous, while Mr. Lodge congratulated the Mayor for the effective response to the recent wildfires in northeast Corfu, with the help of all the bodies and volunteers involved.

In particular, the Ambassador expressed his satisfaction for the actions and initiatives of the Central Corfu Municipality regarding the coordination and the significant assistance provided by the Central Corfu Municipal Civil Protection Service for the extinguishing of the fires, as well as the transfer of tourists from the affected areas to the accommodation centres created in Corfu Town (Municipal Theatre and Corfu National Sports Centre indoor gymnasium).

The Mayor told Mr. Lodge that Corfu was and still is a safe tourist destination. The meeting ended with the exchange of souvenirs.
