Nationwide strike today in remembrance of the tragic Tempi accident
CORFU. Today, Greece is observing a 24-hour nationwide strike for the tragic Tempi accident. No flights and ferries in Corfu. At 11:00 there will be rallies at the Workers΄ Centre and outside the High Schools.
Corfu will be completely cut off by air and sea due to the participation of the employees of the Civil Aviation Authority and the seamen in the strike.
As announced by the Union of Electronic Engineers of Air Traffic Safety (ENIMAEK), the strike started at 00:00 and ends at 23:59 local time, with the publicised demand for the resolution of safety issues in transportation by prioritising the request for immediate personnel recruitment.
Cancellation of all flights
In their announcement, Aegean and Olympic Air stated that they are obliged to cancel all scheduled domestic and international flights. For the passengers of all affected flights, the possibility of ticket changes is provided, without the cost of reissuing and the fare difference.
Ships remain dockedAt the same time, ships will remain docked in the ports of Corfu and Lefkimmi until 24:00 due to the participation of the Panhellenic Seamen's Federation (PNO) in the 24-hour nationwide strike called by GSEE.
EKK: Rally at 11 a.m.Corfu Workers' Centre (EKK) has also made a similar decision, calling for a rally at 11 a.m. outside their premises and a demonstration in central streets of the town. The OGE Women's Groups of Central and Northern Corfu are also calling for participation in the rally at EKK.
Rally outside High SchoolsCorfu SEPE and ELMEteachers' unions are also calling for participation in the general strike on Thursday, and have called for a pre-rally at 11 a.m. at the high schools. The participants, as in the previous rally, will head towards EKK with a protest march and join the rest of the protesters, proceeding together to a demonstration in the town centre.
The main demands are the immediate and full attribution of responsibilities for the accident in Tempi, the adoption of substantive measures to prevent professional risks, as well as the risks to human life in public and private areas of mass gathering.
