CORFU. "What is the alternative and realistic solution to the transportation of waste? Do we want to relive the nightmare of 2018?"
The Central Corfu Municipality's Deputy Mayor for Cleaning Services Yiannis Seremetis made the following statement:
"Last week the Municipal Council approved by a majority vote the transportation of our waste to Epirus and Kozani for another year.
I know that the election period justifies a lot. But it does not justify the rage, the malice and the conflict, the 'no' to everything even if that 'no' is against our island, our citizens, our health and well-being.
What is the alternative if the transportation that some are denying and voting against does not happen?
As everyone can understand, the alternative is to leave the rubbish on the streets, to make Corfu again a vast rubbish dump, to repeat the images of the past, to discredit our island abroad, to make our citizens suffer.
This is obviously what some people want in order to bring Meropi Ydraiou down. Perhaps this is how far they can think. But Corfu and the people who live in this place are above and beyond everyone.
We thought of these people and our island when we demanded and achieved the transportation of waste until the waste management facility is built and starts operating.
Yes, it was this transportation that we were told, by almost everyone, could not be done!
We proved that it could and can be done, we made them understand that it was the only realistic solution.
I accept the criticism made in good faith, but I cannot accept the violation of logic for oppositional reasons alone.
Because if there is no waste transportation, the rubbish will be on the streets, in the squares and our villages.
We have put an end to this nightmare.
And now we are moving forward. Having created the infrastructure for the operation of the recycling streams, we will achieve another goal. In the new four-year term of office, the results will be even better.
This municipal authority may make mistakes, we may have different opinions and approaches with the other parties. But it has put an end to the nightmare with the rubbish on the streets, it is working, evaluating and improving the level of cleanliness."
