ATHENS. Central Corfu Municipality won a Gold Award for its proposal on the Diapontia Islands΄ clean energy transition that has been included in the European Commission΄s NESOI funding mechanism.
The Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality was honoured with the first place and the Gold Award in the "Climate Change" category in the Best City Awards. The ceremony took place on Monday 16 January 2023 at the "Miltiadis Evert" amphitheatre in Athens Technopolis.
According to a statement from the Municipality, the reason for the award was the proposal submitted by the Planning, Development and Digital Governance Department and the Deputy Mayor Panayiota Tzanne to the European Commission's NESOI funding mechanism, which was approved and even received the highest score at European level.
The project concerns the clean energy transition of the Diapontia Islands and more specifically the complete decarbonisation of the autonomous electricity systems of Erikousa and Othoni using renewable energy sources, as well as the creation of a "smart marina" in Mathraki, which will have electric vehicle charging stations, a small desalination plant, new energy-efficient lighting and green spots, thus placing the Diapontia Islands on the map of "green" island destinations.
Amongst the approximately 400 executives of local authorities and businesses who honoured the event with their presence were the Deputy Mayor Panayiota Tzanne and the Scientific Consultant Victoras Dimoulis, who was also responsible for the submission of the application for participation in the awards.
Also present at the Best City Awards 2023, which Boussias Events organised for the 7th year under the auspices of KEDE, were the Minister of Interior Makis Voridis, the KEDE President and Trikala Mayor Dimitris Papastergiou.
The Mayor Meropi Ydraiou stated the following:
"The Municipality that claims and wins awards and distinctions for innovation and sustainable development actions is here.
It is a great and important distinction that belongs not only to the municipal authority but to all of us. Wherever our Municipality is mentioned and heard in a positive way, it reflects and rewards everyone's effort."
It is worth noting that this proposal stood out for the second time after winning the European "Island Game Changer Award" in the framework of the 20th EU Regions Week.
