CORFU. Regarding the clearing of municipal land Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros said, "For goodness sake! Accusations are being made against us because we are cleaning up municipal land!"
Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Deputy Mayor Nikos Kalogeros has issued the following statement:
"The malice that some people bear towards the local authority knows no bounds. We have reached the point where accusations are being made against us because we are cleaning up municipal land. The work that is being referred to is the clearing of municipal land located next to the airport. Because allegations are deliberately being spread that the land will be given to Fraport I want to declare categorically that this is completely untrue and is nothing but slander and lies.
The clearing of the municipal land was considered necessary because of public health and safety. As Deputy Mayor for Technical Works I asked for the work to go ahead and in addition to municipal machinery another digger is also being used at no cost to the municipality.
The municipal technical services and I, personally, are available to provide answers to anyone that may want them. It would obviously suit some people for this local authority not to do anything, not to clean up municipal land and public areas and to leave the rubbish on the streets.
I am sorry to disappoint them but we will continue with our work and cleaning up. Corfu does not need slander, hate and blind negativism. It needs cooperation, unity and work. We will continue along this path. With those who want to and can."
