North Corfu Municipality and Karousades Junior High clean up Astrakeri beach

CORFU. A strong alliance for the environment. The initiative had a dual goal: the protection of the natural environment and the environmental education of pupils through their active participation.
In a meaningful act of awareness, on Monday, May 12, the Municipality of North Corfu and Karousades Junior High School collaborated for the clean-up of Astrakeri beach. The initiative had a dual goal: the protection of the natural environment and the environmental education of pupils through their active participation.
Astrakeri beach is not just a natural landscape of exceptional beauty; it is also a sanctuary for one of the rarest and most protected plants of the Mediterranean: the sea daffodil (Pancratium maritimum). This delicate wild plant, with its lily-like white flowers, grows mainly on sandy beaches and serves as an indicator of a healthy coastline. Its presence in Astrakeri enhances the environmental value of the area and makes its protection all the more imperative.
The initiative served as a lively, hands-on lesson in environmental education. The children, with the help of their teachers and the support of municipal staff, came to understand the importance of ecological responsibility, collective effort, and caring for our local environment.
We extend our warm thanks and congratulations to the Principal of Karousades Junior High School, Nikolaos Martzoukos, the teaching staff, and – above all – the pupils, who proved that the new generation possesses awareness, energy, and a genuine love for the environment.
The Municipality of North Corfu is committed to continuing the support of such partnerships with the educational community, jointly fostering a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future.
