CORFU. With a €146 million budget following the approval by the Inter-Ministerial Committee for Public-Private Partnerships.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is putting the project for the construction, operation and maintenance of the Corfu water supply out to tender, through a Public-Private Partnership, with a €146 million budget, following the approval by the Inter-Ministerial Committee for Public-Private Partnerships.

The project is of great importance for Corfu as it will provide a solution to the water supply problem in the whole island with sufficient drinking water of guaranteed good quality.

These projects will cover Corfu's water supply needs for the next decades. At the same time, 75 drillings that currently provide poor quality water will be eliminated, large quantities of water that end up in the sea will be utilised, the residents' quality of life will improve and tourism will increase.

The project has to be completed in 4 years and will be put out to tender soon.

The Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Kostas Karamanlis stated the following:

“In mid-summer, when we visited the island, I promised to the people of Corfu that in a few weeks a solution would be given to a problem that has been causing trouble to the island for decades: the water supply.

Our government is proving that it does not just make promises, but it delivers. And today begins the tender process for an investment that will reach almost 200 million. We are already moving forward with funding secured for all phases of the project and with clear deadlines. Once again, without being overwhelmed by unnecessary idealism, the public and private sectors are working together to provide solutions.

A project that ‘haunted’ Corfu is now about to provide a final solution, satisfying the citizens' demands and ensuring the needs of the island for the next decades.”

The Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Giorgos Karayiannis, on the other hand, said that “Corfu's water supply problem has been a long-standing demand of the local community and an important unsolved issue for decades, which we are now solving. With these projects, both the public and the public-private one, Corfu residents and visitors will have high quality drinking water.

At the same time, we are exploiting a valuable natural resource - rainwater, which until now has ended up in the sea. We are, therefore, winning yet another battle and we are actively showing citizens that we are by their side, improving their daily lives and enhancing their development prospects.”
