CORFU. The wildfire which broke out in Kouramaditika near the Ropa Valley on Sunday evening is now receding.
The wildfire which broke out in Kouramaditika near the Ropa Valley on Sunday evening is receding this morning.
Due to the strong winds the fire was considered to be extremely dangerous as it was near to a residential area. Some houses were under serious threat but damage was done only to the surrounding land.
Due to the danger, residents received a message on their phones at 19:49 to evacuate the area near Kefalovriso.
200 stremma of land
The Regional Fire Chief Dimitris Georganos told Enimerosi that the fire burnt approximately 200 stremma of farm and forest land. "As a precautionary measure, in collaboration with the police, residents were evacuated," he said. "However, the situation had improved by 23:00 and they returned to their homes without having to spend the night elsewhere.
"Today the situation is much-improved and the perimeter of the fire has been brought under control. There are only a few small fires to the north and northeast among cypress trees which are, however, located in land already burnt out and can be dealt with by firefighters."
29 firefighters were involved in the operation along with 10 fire engines and two helicopters. Two units with 28 firefighters also came from Igoumenitsa with five fire engines and volunteers and Civil Protection firefighters also took part.
