The 'Let's Recycle' Marathon awards ceremony for Central Corfu schools was held in the People's Garden on Friday 3 June.

Stands and interactive games about recycling and composting were set up in the area for the school pupils.

This is the third year that Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality is organising this project for primary schools and the first year for secondary schools. 3,531 pupils and 36 schools took part and, with the help of parents and teachers, recycled four streams of materials - paper, plastic, aluminium and batteries.

The following amounts were collected:

Paper - 5,600 kg
Plastic - 2,560 kg
Batteries - 12 kg
Aluminium - 205 kg

The schools that collected the most recyclable materials and won the most reward points received prizes and certificates.

All the schools and pupils that took part received commendations from the Municipality for their commendable efforts.

There was significant support for the schools from members of the municipal recycling platform Followgreen with a total of 20,500 reward points being gifted.

All the school projects took place as part of the initiative from Followgreen in collaboration with Corfu Primary and Secondary Education Department.

In her address, the Mayor congratulated all the pupils for their impressive results, showing that recycling has become a part of their daily life.

She also thanked the Hellenic Recovery Recycling Corporation and the aluminium recycling programme 'Every Can Counts' for their contribution to the School Marathon.
