CORFU. Central Corfu Municipal Technical Works Department has begun resurfacing work in Ag. Ioannis square.
Whilst the work was being carried out, local residents held a sit-in protest in order to protect the large plane tree in the centre of the village.
Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros, who is at the site, told Enimerosi that it goes without saying that the plane tree won't be touched.
"In no way will the tree be damaged and, in any case, the work is being supervised by the Green Services supervisor Mr. Zaragos. All that will happen is that a larger perimetrical garden bed will be created in order to give the tree more room," Mr. Kalogeros said.
The Deputy Mayor said that the reason a police car is present is to ensure that vehicles are removed from the area in order that work can proceed.
