CORFU. The representative of the contracting company Mr. Kouskos told ERT that he intends to abandon the project, as until 15 December 2021 he had only received €2,000 from the Ionian Islands Region for the work he had carried out in the building΄s basements.
The contractor said that he has not been paid for the work that has already been done and for this reason he has stopped the work and has decided to abandon the project.
The Region’s response
According to the Ionian Islands Region, the contract signed did not specify a completion date for the work, which created a problem in the contractor's payment by the responsible authorities. According to information received, payment orders have already been signed but the money has not been paid.
Fire Service upset and concerned
These delays have made the Fire Service's management upset and concerned. Therefore, it will reportedly seek a meeting with the Region next Wednesday in order to be updated on the latest developments.
When this project would be completed, all services of the Corfu 1st Fire Station could finally be transferred from the current 'unsuitable' rooms of the building on Marasli St. to the suitable building on Ioulia Andreadi St.
In fact, the Firefighters Union is preparing a file with all the data, which will be sent to the Fire Department’s Headquarters and will highlight the serious problems that the building in Marasli St. has and the unsuitable conditions in which the firefighters are working. A few months ago, photographs of the building were made public, which showed the poor condition of the building.
From May 2021 the contract
The contract of the project was signed in May 2021. Responsible for the project is the Ionian Islands Region, while responsible for the construction work is the Regional Technical Works Department. The project has a €238,500 budget and should be completed within 12 months since the signing of the contract.
What is planned
The project concerns the installation of a filling station for the supply of the fire engines, change of the rooms' layout, electrical and plumbing installations, installation of air-conditioning units, replacement of doors and windows and changes in the courtyard in accordance with the administration's suggestions, in order for the fire engines to enter and exit faster and safer.
