CORFU. The process will start from Phaeaces.
The Mayor Meropi Ydraiou and the Corfu Fire Chief Nikos Kolovos announced at a joint press conference that they will start informative and educational meetings in all local communities of the Municipality with a team consisting of Municipal Civil Protection and Fire Service experts. These meetings are for fire prevention in view of the new fire ban period.
The Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality's prevention strategy for emergencies, on the occasion of the new fire ban period, will focus on informing and training the 'fire watch guards’, a process that will initially start from Phaeaces. The training will be both theoretical and practical, it will take place in the afternoons and the aim is to be completed by 13 April 2022 (before Easter and before the start of the fire ban period).
These preventive actions aimed at knowledge development, education and information are considered very important as they are related to reducing the risk of a possible fire disaster.
Mayor Meropi Ydraiou said in today's interview that the main purposes of the information meetings and interventions made by the Municipality are to ensure accessibility, especially to roads and fire protection zones, to reduce the risk of starting and spreading a potential fire, as well as to improve road safety.
Mrs. Ydraiou also said that she is certain that the excellent collaboration between the Municipality and the Fire Service will continue, stressing that the Municipality will continue to invest in prevention and prepare civil protection measures. "What is important for us is to keep human lives and our natural environment safe," she added.
During the interview, the Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection Haris Yiotis said that individuals are obliged by law to clean their land before the start of the new fire ban period. He also added that the Municipal Department for Urban Greenery, in cooperation with the Presidents of Local Communities, has already started to clean Municipal areas, with daily clean-up works in the road network and in dangerous places.
The Corfu Fire Chief Nikos Kolovos said that the effort to inform and raise awareness of the population had started two years ago and is becoming more systematic every year.
He estimated that the response this year will be greater and, among other things, stated the following: “A new fire ban period is starting. Natural phenomena are unpredictable and everybody, and not just one organisation, is responsible for wildfires. From this year onwards, the Forestry Service and the Municipalities, along with the Fire Service, are playing an important role in prevention and evacuations in case a major fire occurs. What must be stressed, however, is the need to inform all citizens and do our best to solve the problems that are brought to our attention”. Finally, Mr. Kolovos thanked the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor for their excellent cooperation and their immediate response where required.
It is worth noting that these information actions, in their current form and organisation, that are addressed to the whole Central Municipality, started in 2020.
