ASTAKOS. With the aid of equipment, a specialist team will attempt to open the ramp for the search and rescue team to go in.

Another major operation is beginning today, Friday, on board the Euroferry Olympia at Astakos Port.

According to tempo24.news, since early this morning firefighters and the Special Disaster Response Unit (EMAK) have been trying to open the ship's ramp in order to remove the six lorry drivers who were trapped when the fire broke out.

Eight days have now passed since fire broke out on the Euroferry Olympia and the search and rescue team is determined to reach the parts of the vessel that they haven't been able to get to up to now due to the thick smoke and toxic atmosphere.

With the aid of equipment, a specialist team will attempt to open the ramp for the search and rescue team to go in, chiefly to the second level, where it is believed the six missing persons are located.

It was not previously attempted to open the ramp as there was fear that large quantities of oxygen would rush in suddenly and cause an explosion.

Five dead

Of the five dead bodies that have been found so far, only two Greek nationals have been identified. The first was found on Sunday afternoon and the second on Thursday. The worry and anguish of Vana Bekiari, wife of the Greek driver who has not yet been found, has been growing.

There are approximately 30 relatives of the Greek and Bulgarian missing drivers at the port desperately waiting for them to be found.
