CORFU. The 21-year-old Belarusian who survived the fire on the Euroferry Olympia was discharged from hospital today.

The young man was hospitalised for two days with a drip for the dehydration and all the necessary examinations were carried out.

The Belarusian and another Romanian are both in good health and were discharged from Corfu Hospital today. They were taken to Corfu Central Port Authority this afternoon to give statements about the fire.

On the second day of the fire the Prosecutor ordered a preliminary investigation to determine if there was criminal liability, with the captain and the crew being the first to give statements.

The 21-year-old was found after being trapped on the ship for 53 hours and his description of events was quite shocking. "When the fire broke out, I was sleeping," he said. "I couldn't get away. The temperatures were extremely high and I decided to stay in the cab of the truck. I stayed there for two days and every so often I turned on the lorry lights to see what was happening as I was afraid that the garage I was in would catch fire. I heard noises continuously but I couldn't tell where they were coming from. On the third day, when I could tell that the temperature had dropped, I got out and, to make sure, I touched the metal. I was searching in the dark and eventually I saw a sign saying 'Emergency Exit' and followed that."
