CORFU. The studies of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff team for large-scale interventions are expected within the next week.

A meeting on the damage caused by “Ballos” storm was held today in the presence of the Ministry of Interior General Secretary Michalis Stavrianoudakis. Deputy Regional Governors for Corfu, Infrastructure and Civil Protection Kostas Zorbas, Manolis Orphanoudakis and Nikos Miliotis, as well as the Regional Council President Kostas Mouzakitis and the Corfu ND MP Stefanos Gikas, were also present at the meeting.

Since the Armed Forces team left, the Ionian Islands Region is solely responsible for the repair of the damage, while the cleaning of the streams is continuing.

The army's assistance is valuable, since they will be preparing the economic and technical studies for the largest technical interventions. “The team of Armed Forces experts will contribute by preparing the studies, while the Ionian Islands Region expects to receive these studies soon, probably within the next few days,” Deputy Regional Governor for Corfu Costas Zorbas told Enimerosi.

It is worth reminding that the army's heavy equipment was considered unsuitable for interventions, due to the consistency of Corfu’s soil.

From now on, the Region is seeking to proceed with the repair of the damage caused by the “Ballos” storm in a short time. This applies to both urgent projects, such as the removal of large objects and the cleaning of streams, and large-scale technical projects.

Funding

According to Mr. Zorbas, the Region has the amount of €1,500,000 available, which had already been budgeted. Also immediately available is a fund of €500,000 from the Ministry of Interior, meaning a total of €2 million, for urgent small-scale projects.

At the same time, an application for a €15 million funding has been submitted to the Ministry of Development for approval.

Direct awards

“We will use every article of the current legislation that will allow us to proceed to direct awards” Deputy Regional Governor for Infrastructure Manolis Orphanoudakis told Enimerosi.

“The deadline for the completion of the project depends on the requirements of the technical intervention. We will ensure that the awarding will start immediately.

Bridges

Tomorrow, Saturday, work will begin on the Afra bridge, where the retaining wall has collapsed and part of the road has given way, while on Monday the contractor will begin work on the Messonghi bridge,” added Mr. Orphanoudakis.

For the Potamos bridge, the solution of supporting it with concrete has been proposed, if it is approved by the Central Archaeological Council.

The Bailley bridge has several disadvantages if it is placed directly, e.g. it is only suitable for cars. It is also not considered suitable for residential areas due to loud noise – issues that the residents have been informed of.
