CORFU. Dismantling operation left in limbo – Awaiting a new bidding process.

Yet again, the residents of Messonghi raised a “wall” of protection around the area’s jetty, managing to prevent the planned demolition. Despite the strong presence of the Police, the Port Authority, the Decentralised Administration, and the Public Property Service, the operation ended without result, vindicating the persistence of the local community.

A critical turn came when the contractor’s representative, who had undertaken the project and was present at the site, submitted his official resignation from the project to the attending authorities. According to the president of the Struggle Committee, Dimitris Avlianos, this move puts a “brake” on the immediate plans to destroy the infrastructure.

“The contractor submitted his resignation from the jetty demolition project to the authorities, overturning the State’s plan,” Mr. Avlianos stated.

Following the contractor’s resignation, the process returns to the administrative level, as:

  • A new tender is required to find another contractor, giving valuable time to the residents.
  • The Struggle Committee remains on alert, calling on the competent authorities to reconsider the usefulness of the etty for the local community and tourism.
