KINAL MP Dimitris Biagis: “Recycling is essential for our island”

CORFU. “Congratulations to both the North Corfu Municipal Authority and the local community”
“The prize awarded to the North Corfu Municipality for its recycling programme is a hope for Corfu and the solid waste management,” said the Corfu KINAL MP Dimitris Biagis.
In his statement he said that “Since the vital interventions for our region’s waste management are still being made, the recycling sector is a key element for our island’s future.
We are far behind compared to other regions of Greece and we are struggling to keep up with the developments, while we are forgetting about our environmental impact.
The North Corfu Municipality, along with the voluntary organisations and the local community’s participation, is leading the way with the development of 104 recycling centres in schools, hotels and other key spots within its territory. The local community, bodies and associations are the leading ones.
Congratulations to the Municipal Authority, and to the responsible Deputy Mayor for Circular Economy, Environment & Public Relations Spyridoula Kokkali in particular, but also to the local community, which proves that with work, effort and cooperation we can improve our waste management and make use of recyclable materials.
It is about time that the Municipal Authorities realise the size of the problem, since even the creation and operation of the new factory will not be able to deal with the major issue of recycling, which we are obliged to embrace and make, as a community, a top priority.
Under no circumstances can volunteerism and the private individuals’ contribution alone solve the problem. The actual involvement of the local authorities is essential, as well as the formulation of an effective plan in order to promote recycling, with sorting at source, rewarding actions and awareness campaigns for both citizens and businesses. It requires cooperation and a plan based on new solid foundations that will push society towards a necessary shift in waste management that our island so desperately needs.”
