CORFU. More and more schools joining in the sit-ins.
The following schools now have sit-ins - 1st & 2nd Vocational High Schools, Corfu 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th High Schools as well as Paxos Junior High School, which includes high school classes.
The pupils are protesting about the number of pupils in classes during the pandemic as well as the subjects for university entrance and are demanding that the removal of the minimum grade required for university entrance.
According to the Corfu Secondary Education Department, lessons will be conducted online from the following day and for as long as required.
Corfu Secondary Teachers' Union (ELME) has reacted and says that teachers will be outside their schools every day as their place is with the pupils.
"Last year we had the weapon of strikes. This year we are waiting for a decision from ADEDY so that we can have a united front to protect our democratic principles.
1. Our paedagogical role is being perverted.
2. We are being turned into a means of suppressing protests and are becoming a singular 'lock-out' mechanism.
3. Public education is being tampered with.
4. We are being asked to teach in closed schools with pupils being excluded and mandatory, vengeful absences.
5. We are being called upon to implement decisions which are out of touch with reality, without problems with infrastructure and equipment being taken into account either for teachers or for pupils."
