CORFU. What the conditions are for being given a licence.

The issue of the municipal car park in Lower Square is still up in the air - Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros says it is a "bureaucratic" problem.

With the ongoing traffic problem in Corfu Town and the tourist season coming up the operation of the municipal car park with 270 spaces in Lower Square is still unresolved.

An inspection by the Regional Department of Transport last week found that the licence for the car park had expired in 2019.

The inspection took place following a request from the National Transparency Authority to the Ionian Islands Regional Administration and Central Corfu & Diaponti Islands Municipality for the complete file on the licensing and operation of the car park.

At the moment the ticket kiosk remains closed and cars can, for the time being at any rate, park for free. However, it is possible that the car park may be sealed off.

Bureaucratic problem

Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros told ERT Kerkyra that the car park will become operational in a few days and that the problem was due to the large amount of red tape. He said that the fact that it hasn't yet been granted a licence "isn't a small matter and traffic studies are required along with a series of procedures which weren't taken in the past - we are starting from scratch. I believe that there will be a speedy solution and that is what we are working towards."
