CORFU. Roda Beach Hotel (1,800 beds) and Almyros Beach Resort (360 beds) set up their own Green Spots on Sunday.
Another two large hotels in North Corfu have begun to implement proper waste management and with the support of North Corfu Municipality and the cleaning and recycling services have set up Green Spots on their properties with four streams.
Deputy Mayor for Circular Economy Spyridoula Kokkali posted photos and said: "In excellent cooperation with the hotel managers we have set up the Green Spots and were invited to train the department supervisors and distributed our leaflets in Greek and English.
From today the Roda Beach Hotel (1,800 beds) and Almyros Beach Resort (360 beds) have their own Green Spots in an effort to align themselves with the municipal policy regarding waste management and the National Waste Management Plan (ESDA). In the coming days we have planned meetings with other hotels in our municipality.
To understand the importance of this work, we need to take a look at the numbers. According to ESDA, each one of us produces 1.5kg waste (recyclable and non-recyclable) a day. Consequently, a hotel with 1,000 beds which is fully occupied could produce up to 1.5 tons of waste a day. The total number of people is the equivalent of two medium-sized communities - so recycling is an urgent need and no longer a choice.
In these difficult times, it is a great source of optimism that there exists good understanding and cooperation between the local authority, businesses and the public - leading to a speedy solution to our waste management problem."
