CORFU. The Corfu - Igoumenitsa Seamen΄s Union has gone ahead with the strike today despite the national union deciding to move the date from 3rd to 10th June.

The seamen are striking in protest against the new labour legislation which is being discussed, saying that it will abolish collective agreements and the 8-hour shifts.

Seamen at some other ports have put off their strike following the decision by the Panhellenic Union of Merchant Marine Seamen to postpone today's 24-hour strike. Union President Antonis Dalakogiorgos announced the decision, which he said was taken so as not to inconvenience passengers. Ferry services at Piraeus Port began at 09:00.

There were problems for passengers prior to that, however, who had been assured by the shipping companies that services would operate as normal. They found the ships tied up and couldn't board, with union members holding a protest.
