CORFU. Two crew members and a tanker driver were arrested.
According to information from Corfu Central Port Authority, the sea was polluted on Saturday morning in the area where the cruise ships are moored.
Port Authority officials found a thin film of diesel oil covering an area of approximately 100 sq.m. of the sea surface.
The pollution occurred during the refuelling of a cruise ship by road tankers when oil spilled on the pier and some then flowed into the sea. Crew members and tanker drivers threw down absorbent barriers and towels to prevent the spread of the oil.
The Port Authority arrested two foreign national crew members, aged 42 and 54, and a 56-year-old Greek tanker driver for violation of the marine environment protection law.
The men are being questioned and procedures have begun for the imposition of fines.
