ATHENS. The first to be vaccinated in Greece was an Athens ICU nurse Efstathia Kampisiouli.

The first person to be given the Covid-19 vaccination in Greece was Efstathia Kampisiouli, an ICU nurse at Evaggelismos Hospital in Athens. Ms Kampisiouli gave a thumbs-up and a smile as she was first to be vaccinated - a symbolic gesture as, at this stage, priority is being given to health workers and the elderly.

The Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis arrived at the Attikon Hospital just before 14:30 to receive the Pfizer/BionTech vaccination/ "For the first time, we can be optimistic," he said on his arrival and greeted the nursing staff.

The PM filled in the necessary form and then went to the vaccination room. After he had been vaccinated, he followed the required procedure and went to another special room to wait for 15 minutes.

The Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou was also vaccinated on Sunday afternoon at the Evaggelismos Hospital.

The Health Minister Kikilias and Deputy Minister Kontozamanis were waiting for the President when she arrived at 24:00. Ms. Sakellaropoulou was the first politician to receive the vaccination.

All the required procedures were followed - filling in a questionnaire, being given the necessary information about the vaccination and remaining in a room for a short amount of time afterwards.

The President said: "Science has given us the greatest gift," and added, "The EU has shown that it is a community of solidarity." She said that we will never be able to thank the nursing staff enough and they will now carry out the vaccination programme. "Now, along with our concern, we can begin to have an optimistic smile," she added.
