Greek PM comes to Corfu with €1.8bn development package
CORFU. Kyriakos Mitsotakis presented the 2030 development programme for the Ionian Islands, which includes over 260 projects.
The development programme for the Ionian Islands for 2030, with a budget of 1.8 billion Euros and including over 260 projects, was presented in Corfu on Wednesday afternoon by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, as part of his election campaign ahead of the May 21st elections.
With the Regional Governor, Rodi Kratsa, at his side - showing her public support ahead of the local and regional elections and putting an end to various rumours - the Prime Minister presented the government's programme for the Ionian Islands, for which, he said, funding has been secured and specific timetables for implementation exist.
"Island policy has been at the heart of our government priorities from the beginning. We have achieved a lot and we can achieve much more in the future," said Mr. Mitsotakis.
He stressed that the plan exploits the developmental potential of the Region, with its high profile as a Mediterranean tourist destination, for the creation of a sustainable development model.
The Prime Minister said that critical issues regarding water management and waste are being addressed with the aim of improving the daily lives of residents, taking into account the number of tourists during the summer months. "Waste. In the past he situation was tragic," he said. "Looking at it objectively, Corfu has now been cleaned up. The future involves much more recycling, energy utilisation of waste, without landfills." He added that air and sea connections are being strengthened with work on passenger and tourist ports, while at the same time, infrastructure in healthcare, education, and culture has been improved. However, he noted that he is not satisfied with the progress at the Achilleion Palace.
Earlier, Ms. Kratsa presented the projects that have been implemented since 2019, emphasising the need for "a self-sufficient, stable government that will continue the country's modernisation."
The plan for the development of the Ionian Islands, which includes projects under design, in progress, and completed, has four main areas of focus: Networks and infrastructure, agricultural production and green transition, investment and value in the region, support for citizens and quality of life.
The work involved in each sector was presented in the crowded hall of a well-known town hotel, in the presence of government officials, local authorities, agencies, and members of the New Democracy party, by the following: Minister of Merchant Marine, Yiannis Plakiotakis, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Yiannis Karagiannis, Deputy Minister of Interior, Stelios Petsas, Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, Deputy Minister of Education, Zeta Makri, Deputy Minister of Health, Maria Gaga, Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister, Christos Triantopoulos, General Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Michalis Grafakos, Minister of Tourism, Vassilis Kikilias and Deputy Minister of Rural Development, Giorgos Stylios.
For Corfu itself, among the projects planned, which will be announced at intervals, are the bypass at Tria Gefiria - Vrioni and improved safety measures on the Vrioni - Moraitika road. Also included are the ports of Mathraki and Avlakia Othoni, the renovation of the fishing harbour in Bouka on Lefkimmi River, the mega yacht marina, the dam project, studies for local urban planning, electric vehicle infrastructure, the waste management facility etc.
