ATHENS. The first Covid vaccines arrived in Athens just after 07:00 on Saturday morning.

With a large police escort the convoy with the vehicles carrying the vaccines arrived at the pharmaceutical warehouses in Kryoneri.

The first 9,750 Pfizer/BionTech vaccines arrived at Promahonas on the Greek border late on Christmas Day evening and immediately continued to Athens.

Initially, Operation 'Hippocrates' will be implemented - secure transportation of the vaccines to distribution centres.

Civil Protection Deputy Minister Nikos Hardalias was in Thessaloniki for the arrival of the vaccines and accompanied them to Athens.

Operation 'Hippocrates' will take place over the next 24 hours supervised by a 'vaccine team' based at the Civil Protection General Secretariat Faros building and with the participation of the Police, Fire Department, Army and Coastguard.

Following this, Operation 'Eleftheria' (Freedom) will begin, based at the 1,018 vaccination centres nationwide.

The first 70,000 people will have been vaccinated by 10 January with priority being given to health workers, senior citizens, care home staff and top government and state officials.

The first to be vaccinated on 27 December will be the Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Parliamentary President Konstantinos Tasoulas.

The following will also be vaccinated - top officials at the Foreign, Defence and Health Ministries, Digital Governance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis, top officials at EODY, EOPYY (National Health System), Armed Forces, Police, Fire Department, Coastguard and the Intelligence Services - a total of 45 officials.

The vaccines will be stored at special locations with all the necessary specifications and from there will be distributed to the vaccination centres.

On 28 December they will be distributed to the reference hospitals, Larissa University Hospital, AHEPA, Ioannina University Hospital and Patras University Hospital so that vaccination of the health workers at these hospitals can begin on 29 December.
