CORFU. Event organisers call on the public to come to the run, which starts at 17:00 on Saturday 10 October.

All those taking part in the Corfu Old Town Trail setting off at 17:00 on Saturday 10 October will have the opportunity to enjoy a run through the beatiful historical centre.

On Thursday 8 October the Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Mayor Meropi Ydraiou gave a press conference at San Giacomo Old Town Hall alongside the Deputy Mayor for Culture and Sport Chrysoula Tombrou and event organiser Vassilis Alamanos from Corfu Mountain Trail. They presented the urban trail, which includes 14km and 6.5km runs as well as a walk for those that wish.

Meropi Ydraiou that the cooperation between all the bodies involved was very important and underlined the especial importance of a joint effort between organisations and volunteers to ensure the success of the event, especially during the pandemic and with strict health protocols.

This latter was the reason, according to Vassilis Alamanos, that there wasn't a large number of amateur and professional runners from Corfu and elsewhere in line with the guidelines from the Sports General Secretiat and the number was restricted to around 250.

Nevertheless, even with the restrictions, the number is double what it was last year - highlighting the special character of the run, which offers participants a unique opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Corfu historical centre and also the excellent work done by the organisers.

All those involved in the organisation of the event hope that it becomes an established part of the island's sport calendar and Corfu life. It is the local authority's aim to make it an established annual local and European event.

Ms. Ydraiou said that the event is yet another local authority initiative - showing that it is taking action with such sports events even at these difficult times and offering something to the locals and the image of the town along with the important virtues of fair play, teamwork and solidarity.

The Mayor thanked the representatives from all the organisations and voluntary groups for their participation and assistance, which she considered to be especially significant and valuable.

The responsible Deputy Mayor Chrysoula Tombrou said that for the first time all the groups and organisations had come together in a joint effort and pointed out that all the income from the event will be donated to 'Faros Zois' (Lighthouse of Life).

The event is being organised by Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality in collaboration with Corfu Mountain Trail and the local branch of the Hellenic Amateur Athletic Association (SEGAS).

The Corfu Old Town Trail 2020 sets off at 17:00 on Saturday 10 October from the St. Michael & St. George Palace and finishes in Liston.

It will follow a specially-chosen route through the Old Town and is supported by cultural, sports and voluntary organisations, which all had representatives present at the press conference.

All the appropriate health protocols will be strictly observed, according to the guidelines of SEGAS experts and in line with the recommendations of the Sports General Secretariat Health Committee.
