CORFU. The school hadn΄t been properly cleaned and pupils attempted to hold a sit-in - but this was aborted when the Municipality promised to send 3 cleaners from Thursday.
Insufficient cleaning, the downpour of rain and the threat of a sit-in by the pupils led to lessons being cancelled for Wednesday 23 September at Corfu 1st Junior High School.
The school's Deputy Principal Giorgos Kefalonitis told Enimerosi that from tomorrow, Thursday 24th, lessons will resume normally as the Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality has promised that the school will have three cleaners on a daily basis. Two of them are full-time and the third, who is on a part-time contract at the moment, will become full-time in a few days as her contrsct is being amended.
The cancellation of Wednesday's lessons was due to the fact that the school finished lessons at 10:30 yesterday because it hadn't been properly cleaned. Deputy Principal Giorgos Kefalonitis told Enimerosi that it hadn't been possible to adhere to the EODY hygiene protocols.
For that reason, the pupils decided to hold a sit-in but this was aborted due to the Municipality's committment to sending three cleaners to ensure that the building is properly cleaned.
However, before the sit-in was ended there hadn't been sufficient time to clean the 1st Junior High properly and so Wednesday's lessons were cancelled.
Normal lessons at Corfu 5th Junior High School
On the other hand, the 5th Junior High, which shares the same building as the 1st, went ahead with lessons as normal as, according to the Principal, their section of the building is following the EODY protocols and there is no cleaning problem.
The Deputy Principal of the 5th Junior High Dimitris Theotokis told Enimerosi said that in no way would the school operate if the EODY protocols were not being followed.
Mr. Theotokis said there was no problem with cleanliness at the school - there is sufficient personnel and no need for concern.
