CORFU. More pressure on Corfu market following Italian Health Minister΄s directive.

Tourist professionals, including those in Corfu naturally, are alarmed following the Italian Government's travel directive to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Two days ago the regions of Apulia and Campania took the first measures with mandatory quarantine for travelling returning from Greece, Spain and Malta.

However, on Wednesday the Italian Ministry of Health issued a general directive valid from Thursday 13 August to 7 September.

Ministry of Health Decision 12 August

Incoming visitors or Italian nationals returning from Croatia, Greece, Malta and Spain will be required to do one of the following:

1. Present a negative Covid-19 negative test result from 72 hours prior to arrival in Italy.
2. Undergo a test on arrival (at airport, port, or train station) or 48 hours after arrival at a public hospital/clinic having isolated in the meantime.

Tourist accommodation

Corfu Tourist Accommodation Owners President Periklis Katsaros told Enimerosi that they have already started getting the first cancellations from Italy. "Business owners are getting very concerned as August is traditionally the peak month for Italian tourism. Tourism has been receiving a series of blows - the negative article about the 19-year-old Italians, the new Government measures...all of these plant the seed of doubt in the minds of those wanting to travel."

Italian National Tourist Organisation

Both the Deputy Mayor for Tourism Panos Varouchas and Mayor Meropi Ydraiou are in contact with the Italian National Tourist Organisation regarding the recent defamatory article in a major Italian newspaper. "The National Tourist Organisation assured me that the article is unsubstantiated," Panos Varouchas told Enimerosi. "And it didn't have such a big effect in Italy as it did in Greece. What the Organisation is concerned about at the moment are the directives which indirectly but clearly discourage travellers from visiting Greece."
