5 stremma burnt in Asprokavos forest fire which has now been contained

CORFU. Firefighters were able to contain the fire just after 17:30 with 15 firefighters - Flames came close to nearby houses but there was no damage.

The Fire Department was called out to a forest fire in South Corfu just after 16:00 on Wednesday 27 May.

The fire broke out in the Asprokavos area and the Fire Department initially sent out two fire engines to the scene.



It was then deemed necessary to send more and now there are 5 fire engines and 15 firefighters attempting to extinguish the fire along with another team of men, 2 South Corfu Civil Protection water tankers and a JCB digger.

The fire, which had broken out in dry grass and bushes, was contained by the firefighters just after 17:30 after it had burnt approximately 5 stremma.



The fire reached close to nearby houses but the immediate response of the firefighters didn't allow it to go any further and, according to Corfu Fire Chief Nikos Kolovos, there has been no damage.
