CORFU. North Corfu Mayor Giorgos Mahimaris stressed the importance of recycling as collection points opened in Agios Athanasios, Rahtades and Afionas.

The Municipality of North Corfu now has 20 Green Spots and Mayor Giorgos Mahimaris congratulated the community presidents and those inolved in the recycling project in North Corfu.

Three new Green Spots opened on Sunday 10 May - in Agios Athanasios, Rahtades and Afionas.

The North Corfu Municipality press office issued the following statement:

The North Corfu Mayor Giorgos Mahimaris congratulated the community presidents Spyridon Kardakaris, Konstantinos Armenis and Aggeliki Leftherioti and his colleagues Panayiotis Papadatos, Municipal Council President, and Spyridoula Kokkali, Deputy Mayor for circular economy and the environment.

The Mayor said: "Recycling is not just a 'fashion' - Recycling is a way of life, for a better tomorrow, broad horizons and the prospect of fighting the 'grey' powers, populism and lazing on our sofas. It is a conscious movement based on the principles 'Reduce - Reuse - Recycle'. It is demonstrably the way forward in this economic crisis as it contributes greatly to the reduction of the volume of waste which impacts on its transportation.

"The recycling project is continuously raising awareness and is supported by the citizens of North Corfu, the academic community, groups and organisations and the volunteers who are actively involved.

However, the collective effort to gradually reduce the amount of waste going to the landfills and increase the amount of recyclable materials isn't supported by everyone. On the contrary, the project bothers them. They are engaged in devaluing the efforts of the local volunteers through vandalism and destruction.

We have a duty as local authority and society to show these few sick minds that unlawful acts cannot damage social cohesion or derail us from our objectives. We will continue our work on behalf of the citizens despite those who are against progress, protection of the environment, culture and our children's way of life - despite those who want to keep us in the nightmare of the past.

Our response to those who want to undermine what we are doing is - more work with a sense of responsibility towards the citizens."
