CORFU. Members of the public are asked to rigorously follow the Ministry of Health guidelines.

Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Mayor Meropi Ydraiou announced the setting up of a Crisis Management Team. "We are facing a very difficult situation which we should in no way underestimate. We must take all the necessary measures and listen to expert advice as the upcoming weeks are critical not just for the country but also for our island. For this reason, we are setting up a Crisis Management Team involving all the relevant bodies and services.

On Sunday at 12:00 we are meeting at Faliraki with all those involved. I would like to let the public know that we are taking all the preventative measures in line with European and Government guidelines."

Who will be taking part

Those who have been invited to the meeting are: North and South Corfu Mayors; the Paxos Mayor; the Hospital Director; representatives from the Medical and Pharmaceutical Associations, the Fire Service, the Police, the Central Port Authority, the Airport, Corfu Port Authority, EKAB (Ambulance Service), the Red Cross, the Regional Civil Protection Service; the Deputy Mayors for Cleansing, Tourism, Social Welfare, Daily Life Issues and Civil Protection; local Deputy Regional Governors and the Deputy Regional Governor for Health; representatives from the Municipal Health Department and the Municipal General Secretary. The MPs from the Region have also been invited.

An 8-member team representing tourist bodies is also expected to attend - following the meeting held by Deputy Mayor for Tourism Panos Varouchas this afternoon with all the island's tourism representatives on the matter of setting up a Tourist Crisis Management Team.

Strict measures now that we don't have any cases

It was also announced that Municipal buildings have been disinfected and a series of measures to protect personnel have been implemented.

The Mayor went on to say: "We consider that the more rigorous the measures we take now whilst, thank goodness, we still don't have any cases on the island, the greater the number of people who will be safeguarded. We need to work together and face up to the threat seriously and responsibly.

We know there will be consequences and we are being realistic about it. Nevertheless, it is preferable for measures to be taken now and to get through a period of probably two months as 'painlessly' as possible in order to operate normally as a tourist destination in the main summer months.

At the same time, I don't think we should panic - that would be the worst thing we could do at the moment and I ask members of the public to stay calm and sensible. I would like to stress that members of the public have not only an individual responsibility but also a collective community responsibility."

Ms. Ydraiou also pointed out that now that educational establishments have closed it is not responsible behaviour for the cafes, squares and public spaces to be filled with people.

"We need to act responsibly and conscientiously," she said.
