CORFU. In the presence of the police matters very nearly became explosive at the critical North Corfu Municipal Council meeting to discuss Erimitis

The Acharavi School Centre hall, where the meeting took place, was jam-packed. The police withdrew, as did the Council President Kostas Grigoropoulos following the demand of all those present. Mr. Grigoropoulos admitted that he had requested the presence of the police.

Also present at the meeting were the protest movement against the investment, former Mayor Kostas Nikolouzos, Alekos Mihalas on behalf of the former Regional Authority, Stefanos Samouilis the former MP as well as the CEO of the investment company NCH Capital Andreas Santis - all of whom made presentations at the turbulent meeting. Along with members of the public there were several members of the former and present local authorities - the former Regional Governor and the Mayor have been in dispute regarding the investment.

The focus of the discussion was on the elevation survey, with Socrates Trifonas and Kostas Roussinos saying that the survey was incomplete and requesting a postponement of the discussion. On the other hand, Spyros Aspiotis, as an engineer, said the survey was adequate and asked that the discussion go ahead.

In the end, the North Corfu Mayor, after praising the public reaction, said he wouldn't be bullied by anyone and asked that the meeting be postponed. He said that he wanted to have more information before taking part in a discussion. The Council voted 18 - 7 in favour of a postponement.
