CORFU. The large eucalyptus trees at the edge of Corfu AIrport are now a thing of the past.

Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros said that the trees were removed in order to clear the rainwater runoff system, which floods every time it rains. Previous efforts from the Municipal Technical Works Department and DEYAK didn't bring about the desired results and so it was decided to remove the large trees that were causing the problem with water collecting and causing damage to the road and the airport apron. A technical study will now be carried out to create a new rainwater runoff system.

Deputy Mayor Nikos Kalogeros said: "The Civil Aviation Authority and Fraport have removed the eucalyptus trees from the airport road. As I had previously stated, the roots had caused serious damage to the road and the rainwater runoff system."
